Tales from Nowhere
An interesting and varied travel anthology, with some thoughtful digressions into psychology and philosophy. As with any anthology, the contents can be decidedly mixed at times, and on a couple of occasions Tales From Nowhere does slide into the quicksand of travel writing - self indulgence. Still a damn good read, especially for anyone who has perpetually itchy feet....

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
The answer may be 42 but can anyone remember what the question they 'focus group' made up to explain it? Oh yes, 'how many roads must a man walk down?'.
A fantastic read - 5 books in a trilogy of four....
Adams was simply a genuis, and as a script editor was instrumental in shaping many of the best sci-fi series ever to have graced British TV and radio.
Like Mike, I never heard the radio series first time round, but was lucky enough to get the whole shebang on audio cassette, as well as listening to Adams read the first book himself. Such a pleasure to hear the author bringing the work to life via the spoken word.
And obviously one of the best openings of any book written:
"Yellow........"

Flow
One of the seminal works in 'positive psychology' - a move away from treating illnesses and concentrating on how to make people well again. MC and the likes of Seligman look at how to improve our lives, achieve and surpass our potential. Shock horror, there's even a bit of science in there. A bit more than 'pop psychology', works like 'Flow' marked a radical departure for psychological thinking....until it was hijacked by TV diet doctors and agony aunties.

Rising Phoenix
one of those thrillers that actually make you think. Scarily plausible as well.

Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time
Still can't decide if it was clever or a bit obvious. Really quite depressing though!
