Suite Francaise
Irene Nemirovsky
Beginning with France's fall to the Nazis in 1940, this book ends with Germany turning its attention to Russia. It presents a depiction of a group of Parisians as they flee the Nazi invasion and make their way through France. It then follows the inhabitants of a rural community who find themselves thrown together in ways they never expected.

Beautifully written and definitely a "suite" with themes weaving in and out musically. Amazing read that I will probably turn to again and again.
Brilliant the way it exposed life during the same traumatic events as experienced by people of different social and economic classes. It is a miracle that the manuscript survived in her daughter's suitcase (!), and I'm thrilled that it was published for us to enjoy today.
Moving and poignant account of life in France under Nazi occupation. I loved the variety of characters and the way the book captures the atmosphere of rural France. This edition includes an appendix of Irene's last letters to her family, which are heartbreaking.
