Name of the Rose
Umberto Eco
Set in Italy in the Middle Ages, this work is not only a narrative of a murder investigation in a monastery in 1327, but also a chronicle of the 14th century religious wars, a history of monastic orders and a compendium of heretical movements.

I wrote about it a bit here - http://www.frontlinebooks.co.uk/frontline/viewBlog.asp?blogID=1425&subje...
I read it first in America in 1991. I was hooked then and it stuck in my brain. Enough reason to recommend any book - that you remember it.
I keep being told to read this one but I'm a little hesitant. Not sure as to why really. In your opinion why would you recommend this book to someone ? Maybe this will help me decide to take the plunge !
I'd recommend it because it's a great read. It's also one of the most readable of Ecco's books. The other replies and comments below are right on too. Great translation, and yeah the sex scene was super.
I'd recommend it because it's actually a very good translation (the language is rich and sensuous) - and it contains an awful lot while sticking to an understandable (if not predictable) storyline.
Also, it contains one of the best sex scenes I've read, all the more so because it is written in ecclesisatical language. :)
It is a wonderful book. It captures the atmosphere of the monastery so well - the tight, enclosed world of learning - which is what makes the murder mystery so enticing.
This was the first book by Eco that I read. I admit that I didn't read it until I had seen the movie. It was a great read. A super mystery novel that took some time and investment on my part. I've re-read it a couple of times and it's always as enjoyable as the first.
