War and Peace
L.N. Tolstoy
This "Critical Edition" is based on the Maude translation. The text includes three maps of Napoleon's campaigns and battles in Russia, the publication history of "War and Peace", selections from Tolstoy's letters and diaries, three drafts of his introduction to the novel, and 20 critical essays.

I loved this book. - Like Kate I preferred the peace bits, but I also got embroiled in the war parts as well. I was tipped off to the newest translation and it is so good, so eminently readable (now I've lent my copy I can't remember his name which is poor). Only downside is the last section which seems to disobey all writing rules by going on too long and being repetitive
I loved all the Peace chapters. Have to say: couldn't hack the War chapters, so have to shamefacedly admit to never finishing the book because the last chapter was a deadly War one.
The war chapters are hard going but well worth the work, they add so much to the story, its worth a go:-)
