Opens at the Shea Stadium at the World Series Game of 1951, where the ball is caught by a young, black man in the crowd, and continues to change hands throughout the book. The various recipients of the ball tell the story of post-war US history giving a panorama of America from the 50s to the 90s.

Whilst reading this book and admiring its energy and authorority and wisdom and many themes and sub plots, the sibling rivalry, the journey from East coast to West coast, from Sinatra and the cold war to the year 2000 just 2 years before 9/11 when I had finished it I decided if I ever wrote a book it had to be like one - epic, myriad, consequential, personal and funny and sad tragic and comic - from art constructions in the Nevada desert to drive by shootings by casual red neck psychos, from a young black boy's dream of holding on to his heroe's baseball to a young Italian New Yorker who escapes his family destiny - so much, so good - do read
