I think it's one of the best books of the twentieth century. If you enjoy it, read 'Death in Danzig' by Stefan Chwin - there's a thematic overlap about places that no longer exist, like Grass' Danzig. Magic stuff.
Rather strange, but it did keep me engaged. I read it years ago, but have never forgotten some of the most vivid scenes.
