Germinal
Emile Zola
Zola was the leading figure in the French school of Naturalistic fiction and "Germinal" is the compelling portrait of life in a mining community. This study edition contains both the text and a commentary upon it.

I did read Germinal years ago when I was doing my 'English' degree why don't they just say Literature degree - it's a haunting difficult book about real people, coal miners, in france - I can't say it's my favourite because in too many ways it is an extraordinary work of fiction - it's too real - too painful but yes - extraordinary
