George V. Higgins
These are the friends of Eddie Coyle: Jackie Brown, the gun leader; Dillon, part-time contract killer; Jimmy Scalisi, gang leader. All the hoods, gunmen, drivers, thieves and executioners wheeling, dealing, and stealing in the world of Eddie Coyle, a small time punk with a big time problem.

Not sure about the term you're after, but the book does contain one of my all time favourite similes - 'the room was darker than a carload of assholes'. Which is genius
(Lord) Grey Gowrie once said that Higgins was the greatest living writer in English. He certainly had a good ear for the elliptical way in which people speak.
(Do I mean 'elliptical'? There's a specialist term for when you don't refer specifically to the thing you're talking about)
