Brooklyn Follies
Paul Auster
Nathan and Tom are an uncle and nephew double-act - one in remission from lung cancer, divorced, and estranged from his only daughter, the other hiding away from his once-promising academic career. Matters change when Lucy, a little girl who refuses to speak, comes into their lives...

if yr like auster avoid this - its a book to fulfill a contract - good range of ideas, but underdeveloped characters and a real sense of the metaphysical that auster tries to convey completly lacking.
True Tales of American Life - compiled and edited by Paul Auster - is a must-dip-into. Reminds me of the Talking Heads movie True Stories. I especially loved the Auster story about the chicken who knocked on the door! Truth really IS stranger...
This is an absolutely fine piece of writing. A must if you're an Auster fan and a great introduction to the author if you're new to his work. A delightful read that you can whizz through and forget about everything else that you haven't quite got around to doing yet.
The thing about Auster is I just can't read anything by him without wanting to run away to New York. His prose is unique and mesmerising but at the same time completely accessible and I'm constantly recommending the New York Trilogy. Nobody has disappointed me so far! Brooklyn Follies is far more easy going, and although Auster returns to some of his favourite themes, it doesn't really need analysis. I agree, it's a hugely absorbing and enjoyable read which elicits just enough faith in a happy ending. Awesome stuff, how about The Book of Illusions?
I haven't read it yet, but did slyly just buy it as a present for my other half with the intention of pinching it back to read very soon.... I'll let you know what I think
