Hearts in Atlantis
Stephen King
This is a collection of stories: "Hearts in Atlantis", a group of men become addicted to hearts; "Blind Willie", an ex-Marine who boards a train has a hidden identity; "Low Men in Yellow Coats", Bobby meets the newcomer in town; and "Why We're in Vietnam", about Sully-John who fought in the war.

I think strictly speaking there are five stories, but I know what you mean. When I got the book from the library it was stuck in the short stories collection, which meant it passed me by for ages.
In my mind, it's a novel, pure and simple. If you follow the characters through they are all interlinked in some way. I was engrossed by the book, especially the title story, and the ending was terrific, poignant and a bit of a tearjerker. I think it's one of King's best.
Though it is described as "a collection of stories" (there are three) they are definitely connected with some of the same characters throughout. I'm not a huge King fan, but this one had me riveted.
