Victoria Hislop
Presents a portrayal of family ties. This book contains vivid characters and an authentic Cretan background reminiscent of Captain Corelli's Cephalonia.

Just finished and must say I enjoyed it. Totally disagree with tcook, but that's cool. I give it 8/10, and list it as one of my favorites.
As this was the second best selling book in the UK in 2006 I did expect something from it. I was disappointed. It's not very well written, the story is turgid and utterly predictable, it offers no real insight into either the lives of lepers in the 20th century or into Cretan life. The characters are all stereotypes, the dialgoue is wooden. I'm not even sure why I've given it two stars - I guess I'm just generous.
I was going to ouline the beginning of the plot and give you some sort of feel for the book - but it isn't worth the effort.
I was given this book for Christmas - it's not the kind of thing I would normally read - but I see it's way up the top of the best sellers list for last year so I'll give it a whirl.
