Small Island
Andrea Levy
It is 1948, and England is recovering from a war. But at 21 Nevern Street, London, the conflict has only just begun. Queenie Bligh's neighbours do not approve when she agrees to take in Jamaican lodgers, but Queenie doesn't know when her husband will return, or if he will come back at all. What else can she do?

Wonderful book with well written characters with an excellent insight into the experiences of West Indian immigration. Good ending, great twist.
A brilliant novel from a very fine writer. It wades into a difficult and complex issue with compassion and understanding - but pulls no punches. I think that this book will be regarded as a 'classic' in years to come.
timely novel examining the very first west indian immigrants to postwar britian and the enormous prejudices they have to face - but levy is astute enough to look at all angles of this experience through the lenses of white and black and the experience of the war - a momentous event that challenges but fails to overcome inbuilt attitudes - ahhh...the consistency of human nature in its worst form...and have we progressed very far?
watch out for the twist at the end!
