Last Exit to Brooklyn
Hubert Selby, Jr
A raw depiction of life amongst New York's junkies, hustlers, drag queens and prostitutes. Meet Georgette, a hopelessly romantic and tormented transvestite; Vinnie, a disaffected and volatile youth who has never been on the right side of the law; and Harry, a power-hungry strike leader.

Banned on publication in Britain in 1964, this book still packs a punch today. The stories within its pages are hard-hitting, with fairly graphic depictions of homosexuality and domestic violence. Worth reading for its sheer power, plus the version I read had an interesting foreword explaining the court case that lead to it being banned. Well I thought it was interesting anyway!
