Bridget Jones's Diary
Helen Fielding
Bridget Jones wants to have it all - and once she's given up smoking and got down to 8st 7 she will. Based on Helen Fielding's diary in the Independent newspaper, this is a novel about a year in the life of a single girl on an optimistic but doomed quest for self-improvement and Inner Poise. First published in 1996.

This is already of the last decade, which is quite a scary thought.
It is diverting fluff for a few hours. The diary form makes it easy to pick up and put down if you've had a long day at work and just want something to keep on your bedside table. Nothing profound here, although I wouldn't say I loathed it in any way.
Hm. How many female fictitious characters would you rate similarily? Emma Bovary? Hedda Gabler? Nora Helmer?
I just came across your comment KateT - you can't compare any of those heroines you listed with Bridget - they don't have trouble attracting men, they are married and have children - they want to escape marriage and children and stifling conformity - Bridget sees it as her salvation - they don't have much in common
I have to say I disagree with thebard, I wouldn't say Bridget is pathetic. I just found it hard to relate to her.
I also think my view is somewhat clouded by the film adaptation!
For me, its not so much the book as it is Bridget herself - she just seems to be so (for want of a better word) pathetic!
Probably being a bit overly harsh there, but I kept finding myself thinking "just sort yourself out!!" ...
This was accidentally one of the first books I read when I moved to England, way before it was a film. Picked it up as it was on the front tables in Waterstones, and didn't quite get it, even if I enjoyed it. Sadly it seems I'm moving more and more towards turning into Bridget...
Very much of its time - this book has already dated. It is quite funny and was funnier then - but I think we all know the joke now and it's well past its sell-by date.
