Posted by DavidK (1 year ago ) A fascinating and well-researched historical novel in which Rutherford episodically imagines how a number of families in Salisbury lived and developed over the centuries: from prehistory and Stonehenge through the Roman occupation, the Norman conquest, the building of the cathedral, the civil war, and so on - right down to the present day. He weaves a complex tapestry of inter-relationships, with the fortunes of the different families ebbing and flowing through the many conflicts in their lives.
