Just in Case
Meg Rosoff
The day David Case saves his brother's life, his whole world changes. Suddenly, every moment is fizzing with significance. He must hide, become an entirely new person to escape Fate if he can. Will changing his name, befriending an astrophysicist and gaining an imaginary pet be enough? Bewildered and obsessive, he'll try anything to survive.

I enjoyed a lot of the elements of this - Agnes the 'older' woman with a head turning choice of fashion, the imaginary (or is it) greyhound, baby Charlie's view of the world and his brother's crisis. Harder to care about Justin. Strange but readable, though want to read something light and frothy as an antidote.
Blackly humorous, the story of a teenage boy who believes that Fate is out to get him. Leaves you questioning what you have read - is it teen angst, is he schizophrenic - or does Fate really have it in for him?
