Sophie's Choice
William Styron
In the summer of 1947 Nathan meets, and falls in love, with Sophie. In the same boarding house is Stingo, a gentle and innocent youth who is captivated by the dynamic couple upstairs, becomes Sophie's confidante and watches, with growing horror, as the couple grind one another to shreds.

Not so much as a novel as a brilliant exposition of the history of philosophical thought. Well worth a look if you are interested in such stuff.
