World According to Garp
John Irving
Garp is the son of a nurse and a war veteran. He was conceived in his father's hospital bed shortly before his death. His name, Garp, is his father's only legacy and he is brought up by his slightly eccentric mother and becomes a famous novelist. The author also wrote "The Hotel New Hampshire".

Irving produces the printed word much like an artist manipulates paint onto the canvas. Stellar. I recommend this book to anyone, Irving fan or not.
One of the great American novels of the 20th century - add it to your list of books to read before you die.
