Trouble is, it's the only long-listed novel I've read this year, so I don't have much to compare it with! I'll have to right that wrong: "The Welsh Girl" sounds quite good.
Yep I agree. Very well written, and I enjoyed it, but not the best novel of the year by any means. Oh dear!
I'll be so unhappy if this wins the Booker (it's currently favourite). It's neither a novel or particularly good. A Booker needs to have something more to it than "a nice little storyline" and being "easy to read".
I quite enjoyed this book as it was easy to read and had a nice little story line which is actually quite sad in the end.
I was disappointed by it. Although the characters are well-drawn, the research impeccable and the details just so, my overwhelming impression is "what's the point?". This would have been a great short story, but Ian McEwan doesn't seem to "do" them any more.
Yeah, I liked it. More than Amersterdam. The final scene is great; he's good at that getting right inside his characters' heads. But there wasn't a great deal to itl
Not sure what to make of this really, I think I enjoyed it ...
