Yeah, you wait years for your favourite author to publish a book and then two come along in quick succession. The first 'Divided Kingdom', a dystopian sci-fi, did the usual Thomson and got well reviewed but didn't appear to sell many. And then this, a completely different book, out recently.
This book is about Myra Hindley, although her name is never mentioned. A policeman, Billy, is charged with guarding the body, for one night. She has just died. The course of the book follows this single night.
Hindley appears as a ghost. BUt it is not a ghost story. It is about Billy. He thinks back over his life, his wife, his disabled child, his best friend at school and is made to question all the petty cruelties we all engage in in the context of this person.
Thomson is a stunning writer. This book had me hooked like a thriller and yet there are no thrilling elements. He gets into your head, and your heart.
I love the fact that every book he does is different. Get this one, then The Insult (about a man who is blind who thinks he can see. Or not.) Or 'Air and Fire' - a Western. Or any of them....
