Unbearable Lightness of Being
Milan Kundera
In this story of irreconcilable loves and infidelities, Milan Kundera addresses himself to the nature of 20th century "being". The novel encompasses the extremes of comedy and tragedy, and embraces, it seems, all aspects of human existence.

Innovative and brilliant. The first book I ever read (I read it for A Level English) with an author that leaves the narrative at will, to go and take a philosophical look at all kinds of themes. I haven't enjoyed Milan Kundera's other books though.
Just thinking about the last chapters of this book still after a dozen years makes me cry.
One of the best depictions of the human-companion animal bond in fiction--or any genre.
I like Kundera...but I get frustrated with him. Yes, we know he likes sex. But doesn't everyone? Maybe he was erotically subverting Soviet domination. That fits in with the Czechs I know.
