Cutting Room
Louise Welsh
Rilke, an auctioneer, comes upon a hidden collection of violent erotic photographs. He feels compelled to unearth more about the deceased owner who coveted them. What follows is a journey of discovery, decadence and deviousness, steered in part by Rilke's gay promiscuity and inquisitive nature.

I thought this started really well, but I found I got a bit bored as it went on. I did enjoy it, but I'm glad it wasn't any longer.
I liked the central idea of a auctioneer finding something interesting and turning amateur detective, but I struggled to believe in Rilke's motivation to carry on against the odds. If it was me I'd have given up, or just gone to the police!
Much was made of this of a female writing in an authentic voice of a gay man. The voice rankled with me. But I did enjoy it. Like you say Ralph, really good atmosphere.
I expected more from this. Though the atmosphere crackles, i expected it to be more greasy with the plot. Ellroy it is not.
