London
Peter Ackroyd
Much of Peter Ackroyd's work has been concerned with the life and past of London but here, as a culmination, is his definitive account of the city. For him it is an organism with its own laws of growth and change, so he regards this as a "biography" rather than a history.

It's a fascinating tour through London but I still feel that Ackroyd is a better researcher than writer. His prose feels wooden and I often find it difficult - I also think he tends to get too clever by half at the drop of a hat.
Having said that it is still by far and away the best book I've ever read on the History of London and would recommend it to any citizen of that metropolis.
