Stasiland
Anna Funder
In 1989, the Berlin Wall fell; shortly afterwards the two Germanies reunited and East Germany ceased to exist. In this book, Anna Funder tells extraordinary tales from the underbelly of the former East Germany, including the story of Miriam, who as a 16-year-old might have started World War III.

Loved this greatly.
I wasn't sure initially about the gonzo framing device of representing the book as a quest to uncover a lost history, but by the end I loved it.
The message that even if you try to, you can't erase history is a good one. All of the stuff of history goes somewhere, and erupts in the weirdest of places.
If you liked this, you should read Comrade Rockstar by Reggie Nadelson, about Dean Reed the Communist Elvis :http://www.booktribes.com/node/2860655
