I so wanted to love this book, but I didn't. It had a great premise but, in my opinion, it just never really got off the ground. I was very disappointed.
I was very dissappointed in this book. Guess that I had too many preconceived notions about what is was about. It just bored me. I had to fight to finish it.
I enjoyed this, although you have to bear with it since as Elphaba (the protagonist) founders in her politics, the novel founders a little in its momentum.
Still, this is an enjoyable revisionist novel - (re-writes - if not revisionism - being something I'm suspicious of. Why fix it if it isn't brokeded?) and Maguire addresses some of the problems intrinsic to the original - such as a lack of Oz infrastructure as well as the simplistic good/bad dichotomy of the latitudinal versus longitudinal. It also explains where the winged monkeys came from, in case you want to find out.
I haven't seen the musical, but I'm guessing it should be okay if it doesn't stray too far from the source.
