Blue Room

'Quiet, subtle, tense...singularly powerful' The New York Times Book Review

Simenon's non-Maigret books are where he really shines as a writer. They are psychological novels on criminal themes rather than genré fiction. For me, the two best would be The Man Who Watched the Trains Go By and The Stain in the Snow.
The Blue Room has a very clever structure and not a single word is wasted. It's a good read, a book that wants to be finished in one sitting. The central character learns that things left unsaid and actions prevaricated over can be fatal.
