Nimrod Flip Out
Etgar Keret
In this collection of brilliant, bite-sized satiric tales, Israeli author Etgar Keret chronicles the strange ironies that suffuse his characters' lives.

These are, mostly, very short stories by an Israeli writer. They are, mostly, about men in their 20s, in love, and usually unlucky in love. They are terse, funny, and absurd. In 'Fatso' a man falls in love with a girl. She doesn't stay at his house. Eventually she confesses. At night she turns into a fat man. The guy loves her, he becomes friends with the fat man, they go out drinking, they watch football together.
The title story, The Nimrod Flip-Out, is the best in the collection. There are four guys. One is unlucky in love, and kills himself. The three guys in rotation have to have Nimrod in their head - this is their flip-out time.
I don't know what the stories say about the Israeli 'situation'. This seems to be partly the hook in the publicity. A lot of time national service crops up, but they are good stories. You can pick them up, read one in five minutes.
