Walk Among the Tombstones
Lawrence Block
The wife of Kheran Khoury, heroin wholesaler, is killed after he haggles over the price of her ransom. With the help of two computer geniuses, a streetwise punk, drug lords and his friend, ex-cop Scudder, they track the killers through the back streets of Brooklyn.

The Matt Scudder novels are possibly the finest detective series to come out of America since Marlowe. And I would rate this as his finest. Harrowing and brutal, but always with compassion and heart. Scudder has been walking the New York streets for a generation, and remains a dark and compelling force to be reckoned with.
