Long Goodbye
Raymond Chandler
When Terry Lennox's wife is murdered, his friend, private detective Philip Marlowe, helps him to leave the country. The police arrest Marlowe, but then release him and, strangely, tell him to forget everything. Of course, Marlowe does exactly the opposite.

Now, everyone says that The Big Sleep is Chandler's greatest novel, but I'd go for this. It's got all the Marlowe traits and wisecracks, but even more cynical and destructive behaviour. It's a brilliant exploration of alcoholism, but also tells some truths about the power and shifting qualities of writing. Plus its hilarious in places, and the dialogue is masterful. A flat-out classic.
