Middlesex
Jeffrey Eugenides
This is the tale of a gene that passes down through three generations and flowers in the teenage body of Callie. Thanks to this gene, she begins to realise she is part girl, part boy. What results is a fable of the intricacies of gender and the untidy promptings of desire.

This beautifully written book is more than a story of a hermaphrodite. It is a rich family history interwoven with the history of Greek immigrants, as well as a history of life in the Detroit area from the early auto industry through the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s. I liked all the characters from the grandparents Desdemona and Lefty through the narrator, Cal/Callie.
I haven't yet read Middlesex. It has been sitting on my bookshelf for years. However, reading the comments here, I've decided to read it now. Thanks! I'll post again when I've finished.
I kept putting off reading this book. I wasn't interested in reading about a hermaphrodite. This is a wonderfully written story. I think the sexuality of Callie was used to magnify the feeling of uncertainty of who we are and where we belong in life. A feeling I think most people feel at one time or another. Thanks Deb,I'm glad I read it.
I was thrown into a different world by the way the author describes things. The language is beautiful and will draw you in.
beautifully written portrait of a family and detriot
yes there is a transexual as the main character but do not let that scare you off
