Heart is a Lonely Hunter
Carson McCullers
Set in the American South, this is the story of a group of people who appear to have little in common except they are all hopelessly lonely. A young girl, a drunken socialist and a black doctor are drawn to a gentle, sympathetic deaf mute, John Singer, whose presence changes their lives.

I really enjoyed this book. Cormac McCarthy has an amazing ability to reach into the depths of the human psyche and dredge up interesting material without appearing to exploit her characters. She presents interesting economic and political arguments about slavery and capitalism as a form of slavery (especially of using credit to create slavery). Very good.
