Animal Farm
George Orwell
Part of a series of GCSE literature texts, with notes and pre-reading activities. This is the story of a farmyard rebellion and its consequences. But it also provokes comparisons with the 20th-century political world.

I disagree with mdixoncm as well. This is one of the classic allegories - and whilst we may feel that 'communism' has had its day (it hasn't - but maybe Stalinism has) - it is the brutal pig dictatorship that is at the core of this book. Modern despots like Mugabe should be forced to read it. It's incredibly powerful and still very readable. It's almost a shame that it seems to be confined to school reading lists - read it as an adult and you'll soon come to realise its power and authority.
Beyond the central metaphor (which I am sure was very clever at the time but now seems somehow tired) I really didn't think Animal Farm had much to offer, I much preferred 1984
Yeah... I'm going to have to go ahead and disagree with you... :)
