Face it. The Lord of the Rings is a masterpiece. I read it when it was ten and it had an enormous effect on me (for the juvinile humourist: no, it didn't fall on me and I wasn't hit by it in any way), and most fantasy books I have read since have not been as good.
this is the most over-rated piece of Literature of all time - it's plain silly in parts - boring in others - meaningless!!!! OK I only got halfway - Gandalf did me a fvour and disappeared down some chasm and I thought enough no more elves dragons dark things hobbits the tedious and tenancious character of the writing - all the masculine sword thrusting - they had to spice the films up a bit to make the female characters even remotely interesting ... I can't comment on the films as the bits I saw had me falling about they were so bad
For a book so long, there's so little in it. Apparently some people read this repeatedly. Life's too short. And it's got friggin' elves in it.
According to a survey on the news blog, this is the book that people are most likely to lie about having read in order to impress other people. I wonder why?
Statistics can be funny:) I think this is because of the film: in my secondary school it was quite a looser kind of thing not to have read the book.
I must add that I don't like this kind of fantasy stuff and LotR was the only piece of fantasy literature I could read and enjoy (my name does not origin from this tale, but I was given it for unknown reasons).
Amazing book. Not only Return of the king, but also the previous books (fellowship of the ring and the two towers), JRR Tolkien just describes everything so that you get sort of transported to middle earth. It is sometimes tedious, since descriptions are long, but still very vivid and creative. I believe the Lord of The rings trilogy is a must-read, even if you have already seen the movie.
It is dated, it does get tedious, and the songs are just dire - but - it's still a fantastic story that stretches the imagination if only you allow it do so. It's also the book that got my very dyslexic son into reading and for that, if nothing else, I will be eternally grateful to JRR.
