Acult member carries out a gas attack on a rush-hour metro, but what connects him to a jazz buff in downtown Tokyo? A woman on a holy mountain talks to a tree - and the tree talks back, unaware of the effect which the financial irregularities of a burnt-out lawyer will have on her life.

If you have read Cloud Atlas then you will be very familiar with the feel of this book. Multiple very loosely connected stories, full of metaphors and spiritualism.
I really enjoyed this book, but I think i would have enjoyed it more if I hadn't recently read Cloud Atlas and 2 Ali Smith novels (hotel and accidental) which all used the unique idea of putting several short linked stories together. Not that its a bad idea, just that it by the time i have gotten into the each story and got to know (and like) the character you have to move onto a whole new story!
Anyway, its good stuff - and I am keen to read a "normal" full length novel by David Mitchell.
A great book, although mdixoncm does have a point - just as you get into the characters they are off and you have a whole new bunch to get to grips with ...
was this his debut?
Very similar to cloud atlas, although not quite as good!
