Nights at the Circus
Angela Carter
A novel set at the turn of the 19th-century which follows the exploits of a woman called Fevvers. From the author of LOVE and SEVERAL PERCEPTIONS. In the VINTAGE CLASSICS series.

I'm with tcook, I loved it. A magical story, told in a really rich language that totally drew me in - life seemed pretty tame whenever I put the book down. And what a cast! The depressed clowns, especially, have stuck with me, I don't think I'll ever forget them.
Can't agree - I didn't enjoy the book, nor the magic and struggled to read it for our book group where there were some real enthusiasts. But, we did go to see the play at the Bristol Old Vic - quite a spectacle.
I found the language ponderous - one particular sentence lasted a whole paragraph.
AC seems to be able to use the voice of her character to make political points, so, are the wings allegorical?? And am I then just too prosaic a reader?
A magical piece of writing - this is Angela Carter at her very best. Some call her inaccessible but this book is certainly not so. A gem of the first order.
