Wasp Factory
Iain Banks
Frank lives with his father outside a remote Scottish village. Frank's mother abandoned them years ago: his elder brother Eric is confined to a psychiatric hospital; and his father measures out his eccentricities on an imperial scale. Frank has turned to strange acts of violence to vent his frustrations.

Still Banks's best. I have no great urge to read his increasingly formulaic output nowadays.
Yes, I enjoyed it. Haven't really liked the direction he's gone in since. There's something rushed and approximate about his writing now.
I haven't read this in years - I must come back to it at some point. From memory, the telephone conversations with the brother are hilarious.
An extraoridnary first novel - and so far he hasn't written a better one. This is cruelty taken to the nth degree. A beautifully constructed book that takes you to the limit. Read it when you feel well!
