Shantaram
Gregory David Roberts
In 1978 Greg Roberts turned to heroin, feeding his addiction with a string of robberies. Sentenced to prison, he escaped and fled to Bombay. Based on his life in Bombay, this is a tale of slums and mansions, Mafia and movies, and much more.

Excellent book - wonderfully evocitive of sights and smells and some cultural nouances of India. Great story, well worth the time. Don't be caught out - it is fiction, and as a piece of enterntainment with the odd smattering of lessons its excellent yaar.
The best bad book ever written, someone once said about this epic adventure of an Aussie crim on the run in Bombay. I was absorbed for 300 pages, mildly bored for the next 300 and abandoned it shortly afterwards.
A fantastic, colourful description of an ex-con on the run in india. Passionate and beautiful narrative writing with a touch of darkness.
