Testament of Youth
Vera Brittain
A portait of a young girl's life in pre-1914 England which aims to give a vivid and passionate personal record of the years 1900-1925 and convey the essence of the common experience of war. It is also intended as a memorial to a lost generation.

I agree with tcook. It's a book that makes you realise how much we take for granted in this age and how quickly times have changed.
I read this book in 1979 whilst travelling around the country on a series of job interviews. I ended up at Radio Trent in Nottingham and this book has become intertwined in my mind with moving to the Midlands. It has nothing whatsoever with any of that!
Reading this book though an intense and passionate experience. It tells the story of Shirley Williams' Mum who was a posh bird who became a nurse during the Great War. The story is heart breaking and uplifting and is beautifully told. It puts our modern lives into perspective and should be essential reading for all 20 year olds.
