Two intertwining stories are told - one, that of the passionately brilliant 19th century heroine, who is working with her cleric father on the definitive history of alchemy, and is locked in a doomed love affair; and two, that of present day residents who gradually, through painstaking research, uncover the tragedy of the heroine's life. En route, they disturb numerous shadows of the past, ending in a terrifying and superbly plotted final scene in which everyone is forced to face their inner demons.
